Use of Keywords

The choice of the terms around you will concentrate your efforts must be one of the firsts tasks. That’s because they affect all other parts of the design.

First of all, it’s better if you focus your attention on terms composed by 2 or 3 words rather than single words. How many terms to use, it depends on many factors. For example, if you plan to invest in buying clicks, you need to find out which is the best distribution of your budget on all possible terms that may provide visitors your site.

Each page must have a group of terms that may be used for the optimization; the relative importance of each one must be clear so one of the terms will be the most important one. It helps that other pages of the site have related terms but it’s better if they are different for each page.

The main term must be included in the title. Also, it will help if some terms appear in the URL as part of the domain name, folder name, or file name. The term must be as close to the beginning of the title as possible.

The site description in the description tag must contain as much selected terms as possible. The only condition is that description must be readable and pleasant to a human. Do not repeat the same term inside the description.

The keyword tag must contain all the terms that has been chosen for the page and they must not be repeated. Place them in order of importance.

In the body of the page the terms must be presented at leas once, but don’t repeat them too many times. How much is too many, well it depends on the engine and the length of the page. Let’s say that it will be enough if you mention it at the beginning, at the middle, and at the end of a document.

Some times the terms in bold, in italic, or between head tags, will indicate a machine that these terms are important in that page.

It’s convenient that some of the terms will be present in the text used to external linking to your pages.

Don’t forget to include the terms in the images alt tags. Some people even include terms in the comment tags inside the HTML code.

Some times the word “over-optimization” is heard in webmaster chats. I don’t know any prove that such thing exists. However, every use of terms must avoid any exaggeration. Try to do the optimization while helping the search engines in their task to serve the users. Never try to use SEO to cheat neither the engines of the searcher, it’s not worth it and results may be painful: being banned by big search engines, for example.
