Meta Tags Suggestions

There aren’t magical numbers to make an strict specification for the HTML tags, however, certain ranges has been identify by many webmasters and has been accepted.

It’s important to check carefully your tags before submitting to directories like Dmoz or Yahoo and read their guide lines regarding this data. Verify that your pages tags are compatible with their specification when you submit your pages to a directory.

Before talking about individual tags, bear in mind the following concepts often associated with keywords and that are used by search engines.

The weight of a keyword in a tag: Suppose that you have a keyword in a tag together with other three words; the keyword here will have a weight of 25%. But if the keyword were among other nine words, its weigh will be only 10%.

The prominence of a keyword in a tag: It will be represented by a number which will be larger for words close to the beginning of the tag, and lower for the keywords at the end of the tag.

The proximity of two words in the document will be important when a user will search for a phrase that contains these two words.

Title Tag: Some people suggest less than 90 characters, other less than 40 characters. Your main term must be here with other words. Try that the term is at the beginning. The title must be meaningful to a human.

Description Tag: 20-30 words seem to work fine for a description tag. It depends on the engine; some give much importance to the first 200 characters of this tag, others instead ignore this tag and make a description of the page with body’s extracts.

Keywords Tag: List the search terms in order of importance. Don’t repeat a term and don’t repeat a word more than 3 times along the tag. You may use 1024 characters for this tag but it’s advisable to keep the list as short as possible in order to give more weight to the selected terms.

Heading Tags: Search terms or words related to them appearing inside these tags, will indicate the engine and to a human reader that these terms are important in this page.

Images Alt Tag: Search term or words related to it appearing with images alt tag, will indicate to the engine that the visual information is also important to the search.

Comment Tag: years ago some people said that words between these tags were taking into account. Personally, I don’t use them and keep comments only in the designing and developing phases; after I’ve finished the page, I tend to eliminate comments to render the page lighter.

Document Body: Must be at least with 200 words and must contain each search term at least once. Search terms if repeated must appear in a natural distribution, not with an exaggerated presence. Few bold and italics will tell humans and machines that the term is locally important. Also remember that the first lines of the body sometimes are used as description in some search engines.
